Portugal - 500th Anniversary of the Birth of Fernão Mendes Pinto UNC

Description: The coin is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the birth of Fernão Mendes Pinto – a Portuguese explorer whose book about his discoveries and adventures at sea and in the countries of Asia was published posthumously under the title "Peregrinação" (Pilgrimage). In the inner circle of the coin, a sailing ship is depicted sailing on a sea formed by waves in the form of text references to Portugal, Lisbon, his book, and some of the destinations of his travels, with the name of the country "Portugal" in the middle below them. His name and the years "1511" and "2011" form a semicircle around the upper edge of the inner circle. On the outer ring of the coin, the 12 stars of the European Union are depicted.
