Malta 2 Euro 2018 Prehistoric Sites in Malta Mnajdra Temples UNC

The coin depicts the prehistoric Mnajdra temples in Malta – a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mnajdra is a prehistoric site consisting of three temples arranged around an oval courtyard. It is located on the southern coast of Malta, about 500 meters from Ħaġar Qim. Mnajdra is best known for its astronomical alignment, as the South Temple appears to have been built to mark the sunrise at the equinoxes and solstices. The oldest parts of the complex date to around 3,600–3,200 BC. In the upper right part of the image, the inscriptions "MNAJDRA", "TEMPLES" and the years "3 600-2 500 BC" appear one below the other. In the lower left part, the name of the issuing country "MALTA" is inscribed, and below it "2018" – the year of issue. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union.
