The image depicts the "Ancient Odeon of Paphos" – a small amphitheatre from the 2nd century AD. Today it is used in summer for musical and stage performances, and a number of events within the programme of "Paphos 2017 – European Capital of Culture" will be held there. The name of the issuing country "ΚΥΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS" and the phrase 'Πάφος 2017 – Πολιτιστική πρωτεύουσα Ευρώπης' (i.e. "Paphos 2017 – European Capital of Culture") are inscribed in the inner part of the national side of the coin. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union.
