Description

The coin depicts the Treaty of Rome, signed by the six founding member states, against a background reproducing the paving (Michelangelo's design) of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, where the Treaty was signed on 25 March 1957. The inscriptions '50 Years Treaty of Rome', 'EUROPE' and the name of the issuing country are presented in the respective languages of the eurozone or in Latin. Therefore, they differ for each country, but the image is the same. The Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community and prepared the conditions for the introduction of the euro in 1999 and of euro banknotes and coins in 2002. The anniversary was celebrated on 25 March 2007. The eurozone countries marked the event by jointly issuing this commemorative coin. Its design was chosen in a competition organized by the European mints. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union.
